ONLINE & IN-PERSON
This Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) course is designed to develop the capacity of professionals working in emergency situations.
COURSE INTRODUCTION
Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH)-related diseases are significant contributors to high mortality and morbidity rates in both emergency and post-emergency situations. Even in non-emergency contexts, diarrhea claims the lives of over 30,000 children each week worldwide. In particular, during prolonged periods of war and conflict, diarrheal diseases can often cause more deaths than the conflict itself.
According to UNICEF, a child dies from waterborne diseases every ninety seconds. Additionally, one in ten people globally lacks access to safe drinking water, and three in ten do not have access to adequate sanitation facilities.
While many emergency relief workers are skilled at assessing and prioritizing WASH needs for affected populations, identifying and implementing practical and sustainable interventions remains a challenge. This is largely due to a lack of professionals with the necessary capacity and experience to translate the WASH needs of these communities into effective solutions. This course aims to enhance the skills of professionals working in emergencies.
